Under the GDPR, processing of data that can identify individuals must include a facility to protect such information contained in paper files, held on laptops or hard drives against, accidental or unlawful destruction, accidental loss, or unauthorised disclosure. In this respect a data safe or cabinet must have accredited certification to the relevant European standards, EN15659 for paper documents, EN1047-1 for magnetic data and of course EN14450 (the secure cabinet standard) or EN1143-1 (the safe standard) for burglary protection, subject to a risk assessment. This is verifiable assurance that the unit in question has been tested by an ISO/IEC17025 accredited testing laboratory and that the results of testing have been certified by an independent ISO/IEC17065 accredited certification body to the relevant standard and grade. Important proof of standard under European law for insurance, GDPR and litigation purposes.
